If you want a fifth, a paste from the same family with a price you prefer will do the same job.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-causes-sensitivity\">What causes sensitivity<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teeth feel sensitive when the dentine underneath the enamel is exposed and nerve endings react. Common reasons are worn enamel, gum recession, brushing too hard and acidic food or drink. A short, sharp twinge to cold is typical. A constant ache, pain that wakes you at night or swelling is not.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mmos-callout mmos-callout-watch-out wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Watch out:<\/strong> See a dentist if the pain is severe, lasts after a hot or cold drink has gone, wakes you at night or comes with swelling. Those can point to decay, a cracked tooth or an infection that toothpaste will not fix. The NHS says pain that disrupts your sleep and is not eased by paracetamol or ibuprofen needs advice from NHS 111. Our <a href=\"\/rankandrent\/nhs-dental-access\/\">NHS access guide<\/a> shows how to get seen.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"which-ingredients-have-evidence\">Which ingredients have evidence<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 2018 meta-analysis of 53 randomised trials with 4,796 patients found that toothpastes containing potassium, stannous fluoride, calcium sodium phosphosilicate, arginine or nano-hydroxyapatite relieved dentine hypersensitivity, with moderate-quality evidence for five of the types. Many trials were funded by manufacturers, so read the results as encouraging but not settled (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29787782\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hu et al., 2018<\/a>).<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Potassium nitrate (5%).<\/strong> It calms the nerve rather than blocking the tubes. It usually needs a few weeks of twice-daily use to build up.<\/li><li><strong>Arginine (8%).<\/strong> It helps plug exposed dentine tubules. Colgate&#8217;s Sensitive Instant Relief range uses it.<\/li><li><strong>Calcium sodium phosphosilicate (NovaMin, 5%).<\/strong> The maker says it forms a mineral-like layer over exposed dentine, based on laboratory work.<\/li><li><strong>Stannous fluoride.<\/strong> It is also used to protect enamel and gums, and Sensodyne Rapid Relief lists it with sodium fluoride.<\/li><\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"fluoride-matters-as-much-as-the-extra-ingredient\">Fluoride matters as much as the extra ingredient<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NHS guidance for adults is a fluoride toothpaste with at least 1,350 ppm fluoride, brushed twice a day for about two minutes, spitting out afterwards without rinsing. All four toothpastes above list 1450 ppm. A sensitive paste with less fluoride than that is a worse choice for your teeth overall.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"price-per-month\">Price per month<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each of these pastes comes in a 75 ml tube. Pick the one that has the ingredient and taste you will keep using.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-four-in-a-little-more-detail\">The four in a little more detail<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"colgate-sensitive-instant-relief\">Colgate Sensitive Instant Relief<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UK retailer listings give 8% arginine and 1450 ppm fluoride as sodium monofluorophosphate. The Repair &amp; Gum Care version is the one we saw at \u00a31.50. Its low price makes it the easiest to try for a month.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"sensodyne-pronamel-extra-freshness\">Sensodyne Pronamel Extra Freshness<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A UK pharmacy listing shows 5% potassium nitrate and 0.315% sodium fluoride (1450 ppm). It is part of Sensodyne&#8217;s Pronamel line, sold for people worried about enamel wearing from acidic food. Other Pronamel variants differ, so check the pack for the active.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"sensodyne-rapid-relief-whitening\">Sensodyne Rapid Relief Whitening<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Listings show stannous fluoride at 0.454% with sodium fluoride, giving 1450 ppm fluoride in total. Sources disagree on whether sodium fluoride is in every regional version, so confirm on your tube. Keep expectations modest on the whitening part: UK shop products can contain at most 0.1% hydrogen peroxide, as we explain in our <a href=\"\/rankandrent\/teeth-whitening-strips-vs-dentist\/\">whitening guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"sensodyne-repair-protect\">Sensodyne Repair &amp; Protect<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The maker&#8217;s pages list 5% NovaMin with sodium fluoride at 1450 ppm. The difference from the others is the mechanism: NovaMin is meant to coat exposed dentine rather than calm the nerve.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-to-use-a-sensitive-toothpaste\">How to use a sensitive toothpaste<\/h2>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Brush twice a day with a soft brush and light pressure. A powered brush with a pressure alert helps (see our <a href=\"\/rankandrent\/best-electric-toothbrush-uk\/\">electric toothbrush guide<\/a>).<\/li><li>Spit, do not rinse, so the paste stays on the teeth.<\/li><li>Give it two to four weeks of daily use before you judge it, and change only one thing at a time.<\/li><li>Avoid very acidic drinks between meals if they set you off.<\/li><\/ol>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If nothing improves after a month, book a dental check-up.
